Calistoga is an incredible place, a combination of vineyard lined hillsides and lush, forest filled mountains. This time of year is perfect for a getaway retreat filled with crackling fires, hot drinks and a warm blanket. I brought along a few plaid pieces that seem to fit the season and location just right. This plaid cape from Old Navy is just as cozy as it looks and was essential on a crisp Autumn evening.

We stayed at Calistoga Ranch, which is an incredible property nestled into the Upper Napa Valley Canyon. I previously visited the spa but never had the opportunity to stay because it was always booked every time we wanted to take a last-minute trip. But, thankfully, we found an opening for a single night and made the drive up from San Francisco.

Thomas and I have been planning out short, mini trips (like this one) for the next couple of months until Christmas. On our list: Mendocino, Portland and Seattle. There are so many beautiful destinations just a few hours or a quick plane ride away.

Thomas and I  have been craving the outdoors, long hikes and just being around nature. After traveling a lot over the past year, it feels good to be home and enjoy the seasons changing and extended time with our family and friends. Maybe it’s because the holidays are coming up, but I’m feeling extra grateful to be home right now.

I wish I was one of those people who could slip on any style of jeans in my size and have them look perfect. After picking up a few brooches from my girlfriend Jillian who owns Sweet & Spark, I’ve been inspired to create new ways to wear them other than on a dress or the collar of my coat. They’re an accessory that I’ve never really incorporated into my style but after seeing Jillian’s recent post on 9 ways to style a brooch, I thought I would create my own 3 unique ways.

I love the look of a vintage brooch used as a hair accessory. It’s an easy look to create, especially for the upcoming holiday season. I slipped two bobby pins on to the pin of the brooch and added the accessory to my messy curls. The results are glam without being too “much”.

The second look is adding two brooches to the neck of a sweater or blouse. It creates the illusion of a collar to an otherwise collar-less piece. I picked two matching brooches for this particular look, but you can also do the same with mis-matching brooches for more eclectic style.

The key for creating this hairstyle if finding the right style of brooch. A piece that has a curved shape to it like this one, this one, this one or this one will give you the best results laying flat.

Adding a brooch to a necklace is a simple way to create something new out of two pieces you may already own. I added this vintage pink one to this vintage rhinestone necklace to create a unique statement piece. I’ve found that a round shape, like this one, this one, this one or this one are best to add to a necklace.

What to wear when you don’t know what to wear? I would have to say that around this time of year (when it’s a little too cool for a dress), my go-to look is a slouchy sweater and leather pants with either boots or flats. I’m a bit of a sweater collector. This chunky black cable knit one from Express fits perfectly over my black Express scuba leggings without being too long, and is warm enough to wear alone. It’s an easy look that would go with anything from boots to sneakers. 

The amazing weather that San Francisco has been experiencing has been having me take any excuse to get outside, grab a coffee or walk to my next meeting or shoot. Sightglass in the Mission is usually our go-to spot when we’re over there.

Naturally, I added some color to this otherwise all black look. This plaid Express Scarf does it for me with just enough pink. A top knot bun and a little lip color keep it going!

Though our trip to London was brief, we made sure to make the most of the free time we did have, which included many of the touristy things that we had done before but continue to love doing. On this day, we woke up early and walked to Covent Garden from our hotel, stopping for some happy snaps and coffee along the way. I wore a simple combination of jeans, a white cashmere sweater and my classic trench coat, but added a pop with these Stuart Weitzman Gilligan Flats in red.

I receive a lot of emails from readers asking questions about what to pack for upcoming trips, seeking looks that are practical but still cute and stylish (you’ll have the photos & memories forever!). For a fall trip, I recommend a version of this combination. Each piece can be styled in so many different ways, making the most of the limited space in your luggage.

We spent a good part of our morning at the Burberry Headquarters, which was conveniently located within walking distance from Westminster, Big Ben and the London Eye.

We had to visit Charles Pétillon’s first public exhibit in Covent Garden, which is now gone, but had 100,000 balloons filling the entire market building. They looked like little clouds floating, a dreamy surprise for those who weren’t expecting it! It’s a part of his “Invasions” series of filling abandoned spaces with white balloons, each representing a metaphor for something unique.

I try to keep my style as classic as possible, especially when splurging on more expensive items, to ensure that they’ll be pieces I’m still wearing 15+ years from now. When we were in London last October (almost an exact year ago!) we spent a little time in Belgravia for a shoot and wanted to make our way back over there during this trip. We made the darling (and very pink!) Peggy Porschen our destination for an afternoon sweet treat prior to meeting a friend for dinner.

Anytime anyone ever asks me, “if you could only pick one brand to live in, what would it be?”, my answer has always been the same. Miu Miu. The over-the-top girliness is always done in a modern, elegant way. I bought this coat while we were in Florence last June after much deliberation. It’s one of my most treasured pieces in my closet now.

Fall was in full swing while we were in London and luckily we brought enough layers to keep us warm. I lived in this Topshop turtleneck last fall and winter and already find myself doing the same this year. I have a few turtlenecks in neutral shades of black, white, cream and grey that prove to be great staples for layering and found this one, this one and this one that are available this season.

These Acne ankle booties are wonderfully flattering and another great staple for the coming cooler months. For those of you that live in warmer areas, they’re also really cute with denim shorts or dresses.

If you pick the right shade, pink can become like a neutral in your wardrobe. I lean towards lighter/blush/nude shades, which are easier to pair. Essential Photo Locations in Big Sur

The natural beauty of Big Sur makes it easy to find photo opportunities at every turn. With that said, it is also very easy to get distracted while driving Highway 1, so if you are the driver, please be sure to slow down and focus on the road instead of the view.  Allow your significant other to evaluate what turn-offs are worth stopping for.

Bixby Bridge – The historic Bixby Bridge was built in 1932, and connects Carmel to the rest of Big Sur. It’s also one of the most famous spots along Highway 1.

To arrive at Thomas and my favorite angle, turn left, just before the bridge if you are headed south.  If you are headed north, turn right, immediately after the bridge. This will take you to a road that goes up into the mountains. Follow the road just a little ways and look for parking. You should be perfectly angled so that you can shoot out towards the ocean and the bridge.

McWay Falls – This beautiful, ethereal waterfall never stops raining down onto the untouched beach below and can be enjoyed year round. It is also an ideal location to experience a magnificent sunset view.

Pfeiffer Beach – In order to capture amazing photos of this iconic purple beach and rock formation, schedule your arrival time around sunset. Be forewarned, however, that, although Thomas and I did see some “purple” sand, it was nothing like the photos we had seen on social media, indicating that either the lighting was a large factor in creating the purple color, or the pictures were heavily enhanced through photo editing.

Essential Places to Stay in Big Sur – Thomas and I just recently stayed in Big Sur for the very first time. We stayed at Post Ranch Inn and absolutely fell in love with the modern yet rustic architecture that blended in so well with the natural environment. Two other Big Sur hotel properties that come highly recommended are Ventana, which offers high-end cabin-like charm, and Treebones Resort, which is known for its “glamping”, combining lodge-styled Yurts with an upscale camping experience.

Post Ranch Inn– What can we say about Post Ranch Inn other than it just took our breath away!  Everything was so gorgeous in a very humble way. And, though it may be a more pricey choice, it is more than worth it.  The infinity-styled hot tubs with 180-degree views of the ocean will amaze you.  And the food, especially the breakfast buffet, is divine.

Essential Places to Eat in Big Sur – Thomas and I ventured out to explore Big Sur and enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Big Sur Bakery. We were also told to visit The Nepenthe for wonderful home-style food and whimsical tales!

Sierra Mar at Post Ranch Inn – The Sierra Mar is the Post Ranch Inn’s award-winning restaurant that not only features exquisite displays of culinary delights, but includes organic ingredients grown right on the property, which Thomas and I most enjoyed! The views from the dining area are unsurpassed, with floor to ceiling windows that bring the ocean view right to you!

As if Big Sur isn’t amazing on it’s own, if you continue to travel on Highway 1, past Big Sur, you will end-up in Carmel if heading North or San Simeon, where the famous Hearst Castle is located, if heading South. So, when planning a Big Sur getaway, you may want to add-on a day or two in order to experience everything this magnificent stretch of the California coastline has to offer!

There are some fabrics that just speak by themselves. Tweed being one of them- classic, chic and always in style. When I think of tweed, I think of the timelessness of Chanel and how iconic those pieces are. I bought this Alice + Olivia dress for those same reasons. The shape and fit, the color and texture are all a perfect combination.

I also wore this tweed combination back in August that’s still a favorite. The detailing of pearls along the neckline of the dress and the jacket are a beautiful contrast against the tweed.

 

Last week I had coffee with my girlfriend Jill who owns the vintage jewelry company, Sweet & Spark. I sometimes envy the simplicity of an all black and white wardrobe, how streamlined and clean it looks. The combination almost guarantees a chic outcome. But, I cannot live without my colors- pastels, brights and all the above. I still do appreciate those black and white pieces as they’re staples in many of my looks. Sometimes, on days like this, I’ll remove all color and welcome those two refined neutrals.

This black Max Mara coat was an investment piece I bought Spring of last year. I remember the sales associate at the Max Mara store (here in SF) telling me that it was a “forever coat”. And it absolutely is. I will still be wearing it 20, 30, even 40+ years from now. You can see a few of my past favorite looks I’ve styled with it on the blog here, here, here, here, here and here .

Adding a ribbon is one of my favorite touches to a loose hairstyle. There is something so young and sweet about it. You can see other ways I’ve worn ribbons in my hair here, here and here.

I love the masculine touch of an oxford shoe, especially since my wardrobe is filled with so many feminine pieces. Late last week, Thomas and I headed out to Napa to shoot a few upcoming projects + get in a little r&r. This is my favorite time of year to be in the Wine Country. The autumnal colors are all around – in the trees, the vineyards, pumpkin patches and orchards, and the weather still feels warm enough to be considered summer. The first stop on our drive to Calistoga was Farmstead at Long Meadow Ranch in St. Helena. It’s one of our favorite restaurants in Napa Valley for brunch, lunch or dinner! The property has a darling cafe where we’ll often grab an iced coffee while waiting for a table, a farmer’s market year-round on Saturdays and Sundays, and, of course, the restaurant is located in a renovated barn.

I had previously worn this jersey maxi dress during our trip to Peru and have since contemplated buying it in another color (plus, it’s now 30% off!). It’s such a versatile piece that makes for the ideal weekend wear.

The mouthwatering menu at the Farmstead restaurant makes it hard to pick just one dish. T and I opted to share the gnocchi and order a few sides with the artichoke as starters. I love my vegetables and everything on the menu is organic and incredibly fresh.

It’s hard not to have an amazing time in Napa Valley. Since it’s one of Thomas’s and my favorite places (we try to visit as often as possible), we’ll be putting together our ultimate guide to wineries, hotels and restaurants soon! Right around this time of year is when I bring out my over the knee boots. I’m absolutely thrilled to announce that I have designed a collection with one of my favorite jewelry sites, BaubleBar! We’ve been working on this collection together since the beginning of the year and I’ve been bursting at the seams to share it with you guys. The most exciting part? The collection is made up of an array of beautiful jewelry pieces ranging from statement earrings to delicate necklaces but we also designed a small line of home accessories including jewelry displays and boxes, coasters, planters, bookends, picture frames and more! While I have the pieces from the collection all over our home, I’ve broken up sharing how I styled them by room, starting with the office. When the first samples of the collection came in the mail, I cried with excitement and immediately got butterflies in my stomach! It’s incredible to see my vision and ideas brought to life in real form. In true Gal Meets Glam style, the collection has a soft palette to it with light hues of blush and blue with some fun pops of color in it!

One of the things I was most excited about designing were the jewelry displays. I’ve always used make-shift items to display my jewelry, which I love using as accessories around our home. I wanted the display to be pretty enough to sit on your dresser but still functional and useful! We used the idea of gems to create geometric jewelry holders that come in a beautiful gold shade. I have my T-Bar Jewelry Stand sitting pretty on my vanity alongside the Rabbit Ears Glass Display from the collection.

One of the boldest pieces from the collection is the Raja Bib statement necklace. I love that it looks like a mix of vintage necklaces layered on top of one another. I’m always layering dainty rings, so we created the Lakeview Ring Set with gold, rose gold and silver pieces to either wear stacked together or separately. I’m also obsessed with the Rabbit Ears Glass Display and use it for all of my rings!

As someone who is always on the go, it was important to me to create a travel jewelry case. Whether it’s a weekend trip or a two week long vacation, I never travel without my jewelry and always used the same bag that would tangle up my delicate necklaces with my statement earrings or get a ring stuck on a bracelet. This travel bag that comes in a pale grey blue with a black and white striped inside has spots for you to put or hang each item, so they’ll arrive safely to your destination.

This is the second jewelry display, the Geo Metal Storage Basket, for earrings, necklaces and rings and has the same geometric shape as the T-Bar Stand. I have a few statement earrings on show like the Florence Drops but it’s also great for having all of my favorite studs lined up like my pearls from the Aloha Stud Trio.

I wanted to start this post off by thanking all of you that have supported me and Gal Meets Glam. Here’s a link to the big announcement yesterday in case you missed it. I was overwhelmed by the support I received from followers, family and friends. It actually got pretty emotional in the late morning, tearing up a bit (in a good way!) from all of the kind words I was receiving! It also got me thinking that if I could some how share this elation with you, we could spread joy and the culture of “accomplishing” across the GMG community.

This is a little unrelated to this post, but I wanted to get across this message that kept popping up in my head yesterday!

So much of our work lives are dedicated to the mundane and major accomplishments only happen every once in a while. It also, doesn’t help that sometimes it feels like the world is against us and our lofty goals. It’s easy to think that we aren’t good enough for whatever reason. I’m starting to become a big believer in enjoying the journey we are on, and not waiting until the destination to start being happy. Most of our time in life is spent working towards a goal. So, here’s my solution- I encourage everyone to go out of their way to help out others to assist them along their journey so that they can accomplish their goals. Give them a hand when they need it. Give them constructive advice to help them make improvements. Or give them a kick in the butt when they need a little more motivation. It’s not difficult to do and it will make a world of difference in that other person’s life! No one gets where they are completely alone and it’s important to surround ourselves with positive people who push us to do better and be the best we can be. The same goes the other way around! To each and every person that gave me an encouraging and supportive note yesterday, whether that be a text, an email, a comment, a tweet or a snap, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I had a little bit of trouble concentrating on my work yesterday as I wanted to keep responding and connecting with everyone! T and I looked up at the clock at 2:30pm and had hardly moved from our desks all day, so we headed to grab a quick bite and snap some pics.

If you live in SF and haven’t been to Nourish, you must go! T and I discovered this healthy spot right when they opened back in the beginning of the year. The menu is plant-based, all organic and absolutely delicious. We usually grab a quick smoothie to-go with the “power balls” (these are amazing & a great boost of energy mid day) or we stop and enjoy some of their toast. This time we got the seasonal pumpkin butter spread and the ab&j (almond instead of peanut).

I’ve worn this dress three times since ordering it from the Shopbop sale last week. It’s now sold out, but I found a similar, less expensive version here! Every woman should have two types of the LBD- one dressy and one casual.

Blazers have been the one item I always rely on to “pull together” a more professional look. I’d been searching for the perfect cream colored one and finally found it in this Elizabeth & James piece. A few others on my radar include this oversized Ganni one, this structured one, this ivory one and this Rag & Bone one.

I consider sunglasses to be one of those essential items that every woman should own at least two pairs of, for both fashion and function. The response to this week’s announcement about my collaboration with BaubleBar was completely overwhelming in the best possible way! Today I’m so excited to share the second part of the GMG x BB series on how I styled some of the pieces from the collection in our master bedroom. We’ve been slowly decorating our place since our move last February, and while it’s taken some time, it’s finally all coming together. I couldn’t wait to get some of the GMG x BB pieces in to accessorize the room!

I would describe my home decor as “luxe” and “glam”. I’m thankful for my sweet husband who doesn’t mind my ultra feminine taste (which often includes lots of pink). He’s a good sport with his motto being “If you like it, I like it!”. One of my favorite pieces from the whole GMG x BaubleBar Collection is the Striped Jewelry Box that comes in rose gold & white with a light blue velvet lining. Instead of hanging up the mirrors and art work in our bedroom, I decided to stack and layer them on our dresser. I love the vintage feel from the mix of different shades of gold. The subtlety added with the Pucker Up Wall Print is my favorite from the mix, perhaps because it ties-in with the soft blush color of my vintage lamps.

One of the rooms in our home that’s still a “work in progress” is our living room. We’re still waiting on some key pieces (like our new couch and rug), but have already filled half the space with items we already have, plus some new accessories. This room gets the best light in the whole apartment, so it’s where we spend most of our time with family and friends. Whether it’s gathering for a movie night, or celebrating a birthday with cocktails, it’s become our hub for entertaining. I was so excited when we found a place with built-in bookshelves! It meant we could move our old Ikea shelves to another room for storage, allowing space for more seating in the living room. We have a ton of books, so for styling the bookshelves we narrowed down the books by color. That way they look cohesive and pull in the other shades throughout the room. I love these bright agate bookends from the BBxGMG collection that come in both pink and blue.

I’m always wearing at least a few different dainty rings. We created this Lakeview Ring Set so that it mixes rose gold, silver and gold. It comes in a set of four rings, which can either be stacked together on one finger, or worn separately on multiple fingers (like I did in the above photo).

I couldn’t wait to fill these adorable ombre planters with mini succulents. We had originally placed them in a row on our mantle but then disbursed them throughout our bookshelves, where they currently remain.

Even though the room isn’t quite “finished”, in a way it already feels complete. Since we’re only waiting on major pieces now, the accessories really add so much life and character to the room. We recently had these vintage stools reupholstered in a leopard fabric, which brought a whole new life to them! They definitely make a statement in the room.

We wanted to incorporate a few entertaining items into the collection, and I loved the idea of a mix of coasters. We chose four different styles; the Yay! coasters, the “Hustle” coasters, the script acrylic monogram coasters and the block acrylic monogram coasters. All four are customizable with a variety of colors! They also make the perfect gift, especially the monogrammed ones for a personal touch.
